The Lions have plenty of work to do ahead of their tour to Australia after falling to a shock defeat in their summer opener in Dublin. Andy Farrell’s side delivered an error-strewn display in a farewell fixture at the Aviva Stadium on Friday night, relinquishing the 1888 Cup as the Pumas celebrated their first-ever win over the Lions having triumphed 28-24 in a thriller.

Santiago Cordero got the winning score for Argentina, after Tadhg Beirne’s try had put the Lions back in front against 14 men with Mayco Vivas in the sin bin. Tomas Albornoz and Ignacio Mendy also went over for Felipe Contepomi’s men, with Albornoz also 13 more points in a man-of-the-match display.

Bundee Aki scored the first try of the summer for the Lions after early efforts by Luke Cowan-Dickie and Sione Tuipulotu were ruled out, while there was a penalty try and Fin Smith also kicked seven points but it wasn’t enough to avoid a disheartening loss ahead of a flight to Australia and their first tour match against Super Rugby’s Western Force in Perth next weekend.

Full-time

The ball is stripped and quickly driven into touch!

The final whistle sounds and Argentina wildly celebrate their first-ever win over the Lions in eight attempts, with a lot of key players missing, too.

The 1888 Cup is theirs and memories of that last-gasp disappointment from 2005 are blown away.

The men in red look utterly dejected as their summer begins with a disappointing defeat.

Plenty of work to do Down Under.

76 mins: Argentina successfully defend the rolling maul without dragging it down this time, but they ship another penalty close to the line.

Schoeman thinks about a quick tap, three points obviously not enough for the Lions here.

Hang on, the referee has reversed the call after the TMO points out a neck roll from Beirne.

Lions 24-28 Argentina

75 mins: The scrum needs a reset, turning around the second time and a potentially costly infringement with the feet from Montoya gives the Lions the chance to kick into touch deep in the 22.

A poor mistake from the Pumas captain that could prove so decisive late on here.

The Lions aren’t really making much progress in their latest attack before they are awarded another penalty.

A tackle off the ball from Carreras gives the Lions a penalty that is kicked to touch deep inside the 22.

Can the Lions make this pressure count?
